I am the Man From Minto© ™ ® - A Prospector Who Knows His Rocks And Stuff© ™ ® The 2010 Mount Meager landslide was a large catastrophic debris avalanche that flowed to the south, into the Lillooet Valley British Columbia, Canada, on August 6 at 3:27 a.m. PDT (UTC-7). More than 45,000,000 m3 (1.6×109 cu ft) of debris slid down Mount Meager, temporarily blocking Meager Creek and destroying local bridges, roads and equipment. It was one of the largest landslides in Canadian history and one of over 20 landslides to have occurred from the Mount Meager massif in the last 10,000 years. Although voluminous, there were no fatalities caused by the event due in part to its remote and uninhabited location. The landslide was large enough to send seismic waves more than 2,000 km (1,200 mi) away into the neighboring U.S. states of Alaska and Washington and beyond. Multiple factors led to the slide: Mount Meager's weak slopes have left it in a constant state of instability. The massif has been a source of large volcanic debris flows for the last 8,000 years, many of which have reached several tens of kilometres downstream in the Lillooet River valley., to the south. It is arguably the most unstable mountain massif in Canada and may also be its most active landslide area. And on the north side lies Downton Lake Hydro Reservoir, impounded by the La Joi Dam, the uppermost of the Bridge River Project dams. The earliest identified Holocene landslide was in 7900 BP (before the present, or read it as the number of years ago). Further landslides occurred in 6250 BP, 5250 BP, 4400 BP, 2600 BP, 2400 BP, 2240. BP BP, 2170 BP, 1920 BP, 1860 BP, 870 BP, 800 BP, 630 BP, 370 BP, 210 BP, 150 BP and in 1931, 1947, 1972, 1975, 1984, 1986 and 1998. These events were attributed to structurally weak volcanic rocks, glacial unloading, recent explosive volcanism and glacial activity. Those who dance with earthquakes and volcanoes are considered mad by those who cannot smell the sulfur. Originally hailing from Palo Alto, Chris married a Salem girl and is currently
Professor of Marine Geology at Oregon State University. His dad worked for NASA; so growing up in a house filled with stuff from the early probes like Voyager, Ranger, Surveyor, etc. made interest in earth sciences a natural progression. He is also into windsurfing, ocean sailing, and aerobatic flying. Dr. Chris Goldfinger is a marine geologist and geophysicist whose focus is on great earthquakes and the structure of subduction zones around the world. He is experienced using deep submersibles, multi-beam and side scan sonar, seismic reflection, and other marine geophysical tools all over the world.  Recently, Chris was in the national spotlight after being featured in Kathryn Schulz’s article in The New Yorker, “The Really Big One.”  His extensive research on the Cascadia subduction zone yielded an earthquake record extending through the Holocene epoch helping to develop a model of segmentation and earthquake recurrence.
Conclusion: our area is overdue for a major earthquake. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at

As residents of the Pacific Northwest, we are all familiar with stories
of Seattle’s vulnerability to seismic activity. And we certainly
recall the haunting 2015 New Yorker article asserting that our region
is long-overdue for “the big one.” To help contextualize these
fears and delve into the science beneath the threat of earthquakes,
we present Dr. John Vidale—seismologist at UW’s College of the
Environment and leader for several years of UW’s M9 Project. Dr.
Vidale’s works lends insight on the likelihood of such a tremor,
and offers a prognosis on the impact a giant coastal quake could have
on Seattle’s downtown. Vidale lends his rarefied expertise to
assuage some of our fears while espousing the continued need for
disaster-preparedness, as well as revealing his thoughts on
implementing early warning technologies in the Pacific Northwest to
grant us precious time to react before the shaking starts. Thanks to

Tsunami warning center scientists usually measure an earthquake's "size" with the moment magnitude scale rather than the older but more famous Richter magnitude scale. The moment magnitude scale is better suited for measuring the "sizes" of very large earthquakes and its values are proportional to an earthquake's total energy release, making this measurement more useful for tsunami forecasting.
Moment magnitude numbers scale such that that energy release increases by a factor of about 32 for each whole magnitude number. For example, magnitude 6 releases about 32 times as much energy as magnitude 5, magnitude 7 about 32 times as much as magnitude 6, and so on. This animation graphically compares the relative "sizes" of some 20th and 21st century earthquakes by their moment magnitudes. Each circle's area represents its relative energy release, and its label lists its moment magnitude, its location, and the year it happened.

USGS publishes a new blueprint that can help make subduction zone areas more resilient

The USGS has just published a new blueprint for advancing science and
resilience related to subduction zone hazards, entitled Reducing Risk
Where Tectonic Plates Collide – A Plan to Advance Subduction Zone
Science. This new Plan describes how the USGS may leverage scientific
and technologic developments, address its stakeholder needs, and
maximize capabilities through partnerships – with the overall goal
of reducing the risks posed by subduction zone events. The Plan is
featured on the USGS main webpage, and a quick summary of the Plan is
provided in an accompanying Fact Sheet (written for a general
audience).

This movie [University of California, Santa Cruz] shows a physics-based computer simulation of the tsunami expected from the next Cascadia Earthquake. The last large Cascadia earthquake happened in January, 1700. It is thought that the fault is getting toward the final stages in the earthquake cycle and could break again at any time. The simulation suggests runups of as much as 10 meters could hit most adjacent shores within 30 minutes.

Seismologists say there is a 37 percent chance a gigantic magnitude 8.0 or 9.0 Megaquake along the 1,000km long Cascadia Fault, here, on the West Coast of Canada and North West United States, in the next 50 years.

This Megaquake and subsequent Tsunamis will hit Vancouver Island, Vancouver and Victoria in British Columbia, Canada and would continue up or down through Seattle and Portland and all of the United States Pacific North-west Coast and Northern California.
It's hard to imagine the power of these earthquakes and tsunamis. When the first megaquake in over 300 years hits the ground beneath our feet, in 5 minutes of mighty shaking we will have been thrust 20 meters (66 feet) or so to the West towards the Pacific Ocean. And, there will be aftershocks. So, let's break it down with sand. The evidence suggests that the last Cascadia megaquake here took place at about 21:00 on January 26, 1700. Since then the Cascadia Fault has been locked and building up pressure. There is evidence that this is a recurring event, about every 300 years or so, over the last 10,000 years and more. Research is ongoing, but most almost everything suggests that something very, very ugly is about to happen.


During Emergency Week last year I was advised that a Cascadia Megaquake was the most serious senerio for us. Since, I have written a Blog/Webpage entitled Cascadia Megaquake which you can find here.


An earthquake (also known as a quake, tremor or temblor) is the result of a sudden release of energy in the Earth's crust that creates seismic waves. The seismicity, seismism or seismic activity of an area refers to the frequency, type and size of earthquakes experienced over a period of time.
Since 2004, a series of rare super-earthquakes has been sweeping the Pacific Rim; among them, the earthquake that triggered the Japanese tsunami - 15 times bigger than scientists had thought possible. North America is the only continent that has not yet been hit. Why are we ostricfied? (One who tries to avoid disagreeable situations by refusing to face them).

Are we next? If so, are we ready? Startling clues show a giant quake off our west coast is imminent, and could be much worse than anyone has previously predicted.

Once an earthquake exceeds 7.0 on the Richter magnitude scale (ML), that scale does not work very well.  It had the goal of quantifying medium-sized earthquakes (between magnitude 3.0 and 7.0)The Richter magnitude scale was developed in 1935 by Charles F. Richter of the California Institute of Technology as a mathematical device to compare the size of earthquakes. The magnitude of an earthquake is determined from the logarithm of the amplitude of waves recorded by seismographs.)

The moment magnitude scale (abbreviated as MMS; denoted as MW or M) is used by seismologists to measure the size of earthquakes in terms of the energy released.[1] The magnitude is based on the seismic moment of the earthquake, which is equal to the rigidity of the Earth multiplied by the average amount of slip on the fault and the size of the area that slipped.[2] The scale was developed in the 1970s to succeed the 1930s-era Richter magnitude scale (ML). Even though the formulae are different, the new scale retains the familiar continuum of magnitude values defined by the older one. The MMS is now the scale used to estimate magnitudes for all modern large earthquakes by the United States Geological Survey.[3]

This movie shows a physics-based computer simulation of the tsunami expected from the next Cascadia Earthquake. The last large Cascadia earthquake happened in January, 1700. It is thought that the fault is getting toward the final stages in the earthquake cycle and could break again at any time. The simulation suggests wave run-ups (tsunamis; sometimes erroneously called tidal waves) of as much as 10 meters (60 feet) could hit most adjacent shores within 30 minutes.
